Toastmasters

While we progress into the first manual of Toastmasters we gain skills in a step by step manner. We then complete the sixth project of the CC (CTM) Manual, and realise that we have the first level of required skills as a speaker. We also want to take stock of how well we have progressed. At the project 7 level we are asked to rate our learning. While doing this, some of us would surely think about how well we have benchmarked ourselves. Yes, we have received a few evaluations, got a fair deal of feedback... and now is probably a good time to really test ourselves.

What better way to do so, than to compete with other Toastmasters?

Only through competing we are able to get a benchmark on how good we are.

There are a number of contests that we can participate in...

Club/Area Level

  • Intraclub contests (ask your VPE for details)
  • Interclub informal contests (these may be between clubs within an area... or a certain geographical location)

Division/District

  • Humourous Speech Contest (Completed at the Mid Term Meet – this is in Chennai this year)
  • Evaluation Contest (Completed at the Mid Term Meet – this is in Chennai this year) 3.Table Topic (Impromptu Speaking) Contest

District/International

  • International Speech Contest.

  • This is the only contest that enables a TM from District 82 to go higher... to the Region, and finally to the International Speech Contest.... also known as the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP of PUBLIC SPEAKING.

The Speaker’s Pool started this year has one single minded objective... TO CREATE A WINNER from DISTRICT 82 who could win the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP of PUBLIC SPEAKING.

How are we going to go about this?
  • We kicked off this activity by inviting Past International President, Dr. Dilip Abayasekara, DTM, AS, to conduct a workshop in Sri Lanka and in Chennai, India. This workshop was truly world class... and the participants learnt a lot from it.
  • David Brooks did a workshop at Delhi.
  • We have started Speakers Workshop for Excellence, where people who have aspirations of becoming a great speaker are put through the basic to advanced level of speaking attributes in 12 sessions. What is also unique about this programme is that it brings the best talent to the table, and helps the participants learn through synergy and cross pollination. Video Evaluation is a key part of this workshop.
  • In Chennai, we will hold an exciting workshop on Sunday the 30th of November. The objective of the workshop is
    1. To discuss in depth the issue of Voice Modulation and Body Language. Videos will be used for this.
    2. To explain to the leaders and senior TMs how the practical, path breaking workshop can be replicated across District 82, and to make a plan on developing the next world champion.
